Packing & Moving Checklist

A FEW DAYS BEFORE
Create an inventory sheet for your valuables.
Start using up things you don't want to move, like frozen or perishable foods & cleaning supplies.
Take measurements - check room dimensions at your new home, if possible, and make sure larger pieces of furniture will fit through the door.
Take photos of all electronics before you unplug them. This will help jog your memory when reconnecting them in your new home.
Clearly label & number each box with its contents and the room its destined for.
Compile medical, dental, optical, and vet records for everyone in your home.
Update your voter registration.
Make sure your pets have ID tags for their collars and required vaccinations.
Separate valuables such as jewelry and important files to a safe box that you'll personally transport to your new home. Make sure to put the mover's estimate in this box, you'll need it for reference on moving day.
Address minor home repairs.
Do a change of address.
Notify important parties.
Forward medical records.
Create a moving file to organize your moving related receipts and bills. You'll want to keep a list of moving-related expenses to claim as a deduction at tax time.
Clean out your safe deposit box.
Back up your computer.
Find somewhere safe for your children & pets to go during the move.
Change your address with loan providers, credit cards, banks, and the payroll department at work.
Order new checks.
Update your magazine, newspaper, or monthly subscriptions.
Update your driver's license.
Refill prescriptions you'll need for the next few weeks.
Make sure you cancel or redirect scheduled deliveries.
Defrost the freezer if your refrigerator is coming with you.
Take photos of your empty place to prove it's in move out condition.
Double check the details with the moving company and check directions to your new home.
Plan for payment - if you haven't arranged to pay your mover with a credit card, get a money order, cashier's check, or cash for payment and tip.
